Committed to water in cities

As an industry, we must act responsibly and proportionately in response to the environmental impact generated by the inappropriate disposal of wet wipes and moist toilet tissue.

Therefore, Stanpa has seen the need to create a project with the main goals of:

  • Protecting the environment and minimising the problem of blockages in urban sewer systems.
  • Raising scientific standards for biodegradable and dispersible products.
  • Educating the public in responsible disposal.
  • Improving and standardising labelling.

The proposals and approved measures include:

  • Drafting the UNE 149002 standard Acceptance criteria for flushable products.
  • Creation of a Code of Best Practices for Labelling Wet Wipes and Moist Toilet Tissue to Protect the Environment.
  • Campaign to educate the public in responsible disposal.

Wipes in the bin

The goal is to strengthen the sector’s commitment to the environment, introducing a compulsory standard offering consumers clear information on how to dispose of products correctly. As a rule, wet wipes should always be thrown in a bin. Only moist toilet tissue, which must pass up to five tests to ensure it degrades, can be flushed down the toilet.

This distinction must be clearly indicated in a standardised way on the labelling of all products with two types of logo. Packages of wet wipes and moist toilet tissue must display the following logos: Standard UNE 149002:2019
